Backwater
In 2012, I went off-grid, building a small cabin nestled deep in the Ozark Mountains. It was an interesting experiment, and I learned a few things about myself, but living without electricity isn't very conducive to crafting electronic music. My workstation was very minimal, consisting primarily of a laptop, usb-powered midi controller, and headphones. All of my synths, samplers, and drum machines were tucked away in storage. I would charge my laptop at the library when I went into town, and use it until the battery gave up. It was very frustrating! As a result, some of the tracks on this new album have been in the works for over ten years. The result is "Backwater" - a collection of 17 diverse tracks (plus a bonus!) that have been held back for too long.

Reviews of Backwater:
-
Testube's latest album impresses once again with a widely installed diversity out of all thinkable Electronic music styles and the indispensable will to provide music to expand one's horizon. Jeff's programming skills often result in multi-layered textures and unique sound experiences which can be hardly compared to any other artist...This is purest art of sound design, futuristic and ground-breaking at the same time.

The songs range from accessible and radio-friendly to abstract instrumental experimentation, and sometimes both in the same song. Spoken word samples and analog synths have their time in the sun as old school industrial meets IDM meets the electronic end of Krautrock. Enjoy the smorgasbord.

Cave Dweller Music
-
After a period of living “off-grid”, Jeff Danos finally returns, and his unusual split identity of melodic, punchy industrial and deeply thoughtful IDM is maintained. The opening, title track Backwater is one of the former, mostly, as it bounces through five great minutes of dancefloor-friendly rhythms and crackles of synths that sound futuristic, even in 2022. His vocals are treated to a point where much of the humanity is erased, but I rather get the feeling that’s the point. A very welcome return.

This is a great return for Testube and hopefully more catch on as there’s a ton of goodies to be discovered on “Backwater”. Eight out of ten.
